What does CityCLAC do?
The City Community Legal Advice Centre (CityCLAC) offers free, confidential, one-off legal advice to people who can’t afford to pay for a lawyer and are not eligible for legal aid.

How do I request free legal advice?
Please complete our online enquiry form (see below) so we can check whether your issue is something we can help with.

If you prefer, you can contact us by phone or email: 020 7040 5414, clac@city.ac.uk. Please leave a short message or send an email with a brief description of your situation.

We aim to reply as soon as possible. However, because many people contact us—especially at busy times—we can’t always respond to everyone personally. When this happens, we send automatic emails explaining the situation and giving referral information for other organisations that may be able to help.

What happens after I contact you?
Once we receive your enquiry, we will:
1. Check if your problem is something we can deal with.
       - If it isn’t, we’ll email you information about other organisations that may be able to help.
2. If it is something we can look at, we’ll arrange for a student law firm supervised by a qualified lawyer to take details of your case. (You won’t receive legal advice at this stage.) This helps us decide whether it’s in your best interests to use our service. We may decide not to offer an appointment if we believe our service isn’t suitable or if our checks mean we can’t proceed.
3. A supervising lawyer will then review your information and decide if we can take your case forward. If we can help, we’ll confirm your advice appointment. If not, we’ll try to signpost you to other sources of help.

How we handle your information (Privacy)?

To see if we can help you, we need to collect information about your situation. This may include sensitive personal data (for example, information about your health if you’re seeking PIP form filling assistance).

We only collect the information we need to:

- check whether your problem is something we can help with,
- make sure there’s no conflict of interest, and
- arrange and deliver your appointment.

Your information is stored safely in our secure case management system. Authorised staff and volunteer lawyers working on your matter may access and use your data through this system to deal with your enquiry. Everyone involved must keep your information confidential and secure. We never sell, rent, or share your data.

Who is responsible for your information?

This means we are legally responsible for deciding what personal data we collect, why we collect it, and how it’s used and stored. We are committed to handling your information lawfully, fairly, securely, and only for as long as necessary.

Volunteer lawyers (many of whom work at large law firms) may also act as independent data controllers when they volunteer with us. Each firm must follow data protection law for the personal data they access while volunteering at CityCLAC.If you’d like a link to the privacy notice of the law firm who are involved in your case, please email clac@city.ac.uk.

Please note we need certain information to assess your case. If you are not able to provide it we may not be able to help you.

The descriptions are based on the government’s 2001 Census. This question is not about your nationality, place of birth or citizenship – it is about the group to which you as an individual perceive you belong.

The Equality Act 2010 defines disability as “a physical or mental impairment” which “has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on [a person’s] ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities”.
